Text Complexity: Raising Rigor in Reading

A couple of months ago, we were blogging regarding Text Complexity and how new reading series have changed from leveling books from A-J vs. below level, on-level and above level.  Click on this link and read a few interesting pages about the relationship between Text Complexity and Common Core.  We believe with "some" Reading Specialists advocating to classroom teachers "No More Running Records!" that there is a misunderstanding.  No More Running Records!!! REALLY ???? GR out the Door with Common Core!!! (Click here is a previous blog that we posted looking for answers.  We reached out to several bloggers and received great insight.  Thank you!!!  However, this chapter in the book entitled, Text Complexity:  Raising a Rigor in Reading was the summary that put our minds at ease.  We just ordered this book and can't wait to read it!  If you know of other great resources on text levels, please let us know.

Thanks for the reply post. Nicolle, who sent the Q&A email was primarily responding to my blog post of yesterday, that although doesn't say "Text Complexity" in the blog post title, is 1/2 about text complexity, the afternoon of the workshop I was presenting. Here is the link: http://www.helloliteracy.blogspot.com/2013/01/bringing-common-core-critical-thinking.html?m=1

Also, (FTR) I have never discouraged the use of running records or ever said, "no more running records"...in fact, I believe they are one of the best indicators of reading growth when done informally and frequently, and that the miscue analysis is one of the most underused pieces of reading data at teachers' fingertips.

I will have to check out that book!

Thanks Jen!
You helped us out a few months back and oh boy, we are grateful!!!! We are sad to say that our co-workers have been discouraged from utilizing Running Records. We agree with the importance of miscue analysis. Thanks for the link; we will check it out. You are one of the BEST Jen and we enjoy reading your blog!!!

OMG this book is sitting in front of me right now and I am reading it as I write this little comment. Do not tell on me. Diane Lapp has spoken several times at meetings I have attended and this text is not for the faint at heart. Do not take it to the beach for entertainment but I recommend it for great information!

Thanks Fran,
We have been in a see-saw debate at our school with this no more running records nonsense! We understand both sides of the argument but how do you diagnosis struggling readers without a miscue analysis? How do you know how a primary kiddo is reading on a cold read that is given to a class full of kiddos at once? Can you really rely on a multiple choice test? We say "No Way Jose!" We are so appreciative to have the blogging world to vent, calm down and understand different perspectives. Thank you Fran and rest of our blogging world; don't know what we would do w/o u!!!

Have a good one!
